Military Veteran: Tony Bowling

Tony worked in Human Resources and Recruiting for the military for 22 years. Throughout his service, he learned how to be flexible and adapt to being a part of a team, which helps him in his everyday life.

When did you enlist?

On March 26, 1999, I enlisted in the Army at 17 during my senior year of high school

Tony completed his basic training in Ft. Knox, Kentucky, and his job training in Ft. Jackson, South Carolina. He was stationed CONUS in Texas, Germany, California, and Kentucky during his service. Tony also deployed OCONUS to Iraq, Qatar, Oman, UAE, Kuwait, and Romania.

What is your most significant achievement from your time in the military?

My greatest achievement was establishing the first post offices across Central Iraq after the initial invasion in late 2003.

What was the most important thing you learned from his time in the service?

“Communication. You learn when to speak and when to listen. This has become an invaluable skill throughout life.”

How was the transition from military life to the civilian world?

“It was hard at first. When you’re in, you want to serve long enough to retire. Once I was out, I missed being a part of the team and surrounded by lifelong friends from different backgrounds I made along the way!”
